Facebook Tips & Tricks

I would like to share a few Facebook tips and tricks that I’ve learned recently. Do you have a great Facebook tip or trick you’d like to share? Email it to jon@northlinx.com and I’ll feature it in a future newsletter.

Personal vs. Business

This first tip is basic Facebook knowledge, but if you are about to set up your account, it helps to know this. A Facebook page is created within a personal profile. First you create a personal profile, then from there you create a page for your business. Once you create a page, you can immediately share the page with your network, who can then share it with their network. This is the “social” part of social networking.

Sharing vs. Liking

When you “Like” a page, you are connecting to that page and allowing updates from that page will appear in your news feed.

When you "Like" a piece of content in a news feed, you are simply letting the world know that you like it without leaving a comment.

When you “Share” a piece of content, you can post it to your profile and to your friend’s news feeds with a comment about why you are sharing it. Whoever you share it with can share it with their network as well. Again, the “social” aspect of social networking comes in to play.

Links Trump Status Updates, Photos and Videos Trump Links

Facebook gives priority to certain types of posts. For example, if you add a link to your post it is more likely to show up in news feeds. What’s the point? Links are more effective at driving "user engagement," which translates into people spending more time on Facebook.

Just as links show up more than status updates, so do photos and videos. Here, too, it is likely a matter of engagement. Think about times you've spotted a thumbnail-size photo from a friend in your feed and clicked to see it full-size. Facebook likes clicks, and photos deliver them.

Day of the week matters

Research conducted by Facebook shows that people are happier overall on Thursdays and Fridays, so engagement rates on those two days are nearly 20% higher overall. But it is different for different types of businesses, read more about the best time for your business to post here.
